How to Get Rid of Gingivitis

How to Get Rid of Gingivitis

Are you experiencing bad breath? Do your gums feel swollen and tender? You might have gingivitis and should start treatment immediately before it develops into a more advanced stage, which will be harder to cure.

I will discuss eliminating gingivitis using some fantastic home remedies in this article. If caught in the early stages, implementing a good oral hygiene schedule is straightforward, resulting in healthy teeth and gums.

Treating your Gingivitis at Home

When gum disease is still in its early stages, it is easier to treat; however, you need to have a professional look if left untreated. I have compiled a list of home remedies to help you eliminate gingivitis.

Good Oral Hygiene

The first step in ridding yourself of gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene.

There is no point in trying these remedies if you are not looking after your teeth; brushing when you wake up and again in the evening ensures that plaque removal happens daily.

Flossing is essential, and you should do it daily as well. However, it would also help to go for a professional cleaning at least once every six months to prevent plaque build-up in the future.

Salt Water Rinse

Salt Water Rinse

Saltwater is a fantastic natural disinfectant. This rinse will aid in healing the inflammation in your gums along with many other benefits, which include:

  • Reducing bacteria
  • Removing hidden food particles
  • Soothing inflammation
  • Easing pain
  • Helping with bad breath

How to Make the Mixture:

Fill a glass with lukewarm water, add ¾ teaspoon of salt, and stir until combined. Then, swirl the rinse in your mouth for 30 seconds and spit. Use this solution two to three times a day for the best results.

Because there is so much acid in this mixture, it can harm your tooth enamel if used excessively, so avoid overuse.

Make your Mouthwash

If your gum disease has developed to a more advanced stage and the saltwater mix is not working, you can try a few homemade drops of mouthwash. A vital element to remember is that you should never swallow mouthwash, so be sure to spit it out after swirling it in your mouth.

Sage Mouthwash

Sage is a fantastic herb to use in a mouthwash. It lowers the number of bacteria that contribute to plaque. However, swirling this rinse in your mouth for 1 minute would be best for the best results.

How to make the mixture

To start, you need 1 ½ cups of boiling water. Next, add 2 tbsp of fresh sage (if you don’t have fresh sage, you can use 1 tsp of dried sage) to the boiling water.

Leave this solution to soak for 10 minutes, then strain and let it cool. Once cooled, you can use the rinse two to three times a day.

Sage is also a great ingredient for swollen or inflamed gums, as it contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Aloe Mouthwash

Aloe Vera is an excellent option for getting rid of gingivitis and significantly reducing plaque and gum disease.

There is no need to make a mixture; all you have to do is buy aloe vera juice and use it to rinse out your mouth for 30 seconds, and spit it out. You can do this two to three times a day. You must use pure aloe vera juice like this one from George’s. If you are allergic to aloe, you should try a different method.

Lemongrass Oil Mouthwash

Just like aloe vera, lemongrass oil can significantly reduce the amount of plaque and gingivitis.

How to Make the Mixture

Take your lemongrass essential oil and pour two drops into a cup of water. Swirl the mixture around your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out. You can repeat this mix three times a day for the best results.

Lemongrass essential oil is very potent, so use a highly diluted mix first; you can increase the amount to three drops in your water as you progress through your treatment.

Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash

Tea tree oil is an alternative natural home remedy that has proven effective in treating gingivitis.

How to Make the Mixture

Fill 1 cup with warm water and add two drops of tea tree oil. Swirl the mixture around your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out. Use this rinse two to three times a day.

An easier way to use tea tree oil is to add a drop to your toothpaste when you brush your teeth. If you have never used this oil, you need to dilute your mixture as high concentrations can cause:

  • A rash
  • An allergic reaction
  • A mild burning sensation

Topical Treatment

Turmeric Gel

Turmeric is a great spice that prevents plaque build-up and gum disease as it has anti-inflammatory properties.

You can also use it to heal inflammation of the gums and bleeding. I have found that this gel from A1Vitality is the best product you can buy.

How to Apply Turmeric Gel

Firstly, brush your teeth and rinse out your mouth thoroughly with water. Next, apply the gel to your gums, which must sit for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, swirl the water around in your mouth and spit it out.

When Home Remedies Don’t Work

When Home Remedies Don't Work

If none of these remedies work, the next step would be to see your dentist. If you are experiencing the following symptoms, you should seek professional care immediately:

  • Severe toothache
  • Severe bleeding, especially when you brush your teeth
  • Foul breath
  • Extremely swollen or inflamed gums

To treat your gingivitis, your dentist might need to use one of these methods:

  • Professional cleaning

Your trusted dentist will remove the plaque and tartar build-up using dental instruments, a laser, or an ultrasonic device, often called scaling and root planing.

  • Dental restoration

If your teeth are misaligned or have any other dental problems, your dentist might recommend dental restoration, which will help reduce plaque and tartar build-up, which thrives in all the cracks and crevices.
